Merino Excellence on Display at the Bendigo Sheep & Wool Show 2026
There’s something truly special about spending a day surrounded by people who are passionate about what they do. Yesterday I had the privilege of photographing the Merino judging at the Bendigo Sheep & Wool Show 2026, capturing not only award-winning sheep but also the dedication, pride and community that make this event one of Victoria’s most respected agricultural gatherings.
As a photographer, I love documenting authentic moments, and there was no shortage of them throughout the day. From championship ribbons being awarded to quiet interactions between handlers and their sheep, every image told a story of generations of knowledge, hard work and genuine care for these remarkable animals.
The quality of the Merinos on display was exceptional. Beautiful fleeces, outstanding conformation and calm temperaments reflected the countless hours breeders invest throughout the year. Watching the judging unfold was a reminder of the high standards Victoria's sheep industry continues to uphold.
One of the things that stood out most was the way the sheep were handled. The exhibitors and handlers showed tremendous patience, skill and respect, ensuring the animals remained relaxed and comfortable throughout the judging process. It was wonderful to see content sheep confidently presented in front of the judges and the large crowd gathered ringside.
The event attracted visitors of all ages, from young children discovering agriculture for the first time to long-time sheep breeders and farming families who travelled from across Victoria and beyond. Conversations filled the sheds as people admired the quality of the wool, exchanged knowledge and celebrated the achievements of fellow exhibitors.
I'd like to extend a sincere thank you to Kevin Crook, President of the Bendigo Sheep & Wool Show, and Kelly Ternouth for their outstanding organisation and for engaging me to photograph this fantastic event. Their commitment, together with the efforts of the many volunteers and organisers working behind the scenes, created a welcoming and professional atmosphere that showcased the very best of Victoria's sheep industry.
Alongside photographing the day, I also created a behind-the-scenes reel capturing the energy, excitement and incredible people who make this event so memorable.
